Mexico's Surf Town Struggling with Contaminated Water Due to Broken Pipe: Handling Water Issues in Sayulita with Caution

Dear Readers,

with a sense of responsibility, we would like to draw your attention to a concerning situation regarding water quality in Sayulita. Due to conflicting information about the complete resolution of a faulty sewage pipeline at the Sayulita wastewater treatment plant, our team at Almar Surf & Skate School has decided to act with caution and refrain from entering the water in Sayulita until the situation is clarified.

The Current Water Issue in Sayulita

The uncertainty surrounding the water problem prompts us to advise against surf lessons or individual surf sessions in Sayulita. Instead, we encourage redirecting surf activities to the cleaner beaches of La Lancha or Punta de Mita. We can offer surf lessons at beaches like La Lancha and Punta de Mita, and for experienced surfers who do not require lessons, surf transport services are available to ensure quick and easy access to alternative surf locations.

Oromapas' Response to the Situation

Due to the natural phenomenon known as the "marea de fondo" (undercurrent), the underwater emitter located 1.8 km off the coast of Sayulita has experienced a displacement from its original position. At OROMAPAS, we take environmental protection and proper waste management seriously. Therefore, through initiatives and instructions from our president, Mrs. Maestra Mirtha Iliana Villalvazo Amaya, and the organization's director, Mr. Raúl Gutiérrez Casillas, a team of expert divers has been hired to work on resolving this situation as soon as possible. We commit to keeping you informed about the progress and the estimated date for the restoration of the system.

As a continuation of last week's update, Orosmapas continues to work on the situation. Many of you may have noticed that the emitter is currently not fully connected. This is because the system is being worked on to reconnect it to the seabed. Once this system is completed and installed, the emitter will be used as intended. Currently, treated water is stored in a "carcamo" or storage tank. This tank was expanded during the water treatment upgrades carried out about 10 years ago. Additionally, Orosmapas has repaired a part of the internal facility, enabling a more efficient and effective water treatment. Finally, we are still awaiting news on when a "Vector" will arrive to clean the sewer pipe that runs along Calle Navarette. This needs to be done almost annually as both restaurants and houses introduce items into the system that shouldn't be there, causing blockages in the pipe. As a reminder, street cleaning has been completed, and water testing is scheduled for this week. For further information, feel free to contact Oromapas directly, whose FB page also includes their contact details: Oromapas Facebook

Participate in the Solution

Divers are out every day doing their best. This town has rapidly grown and cannot keep up with the demand of the population. If you wish to be part of the solution, please consider donating to prosayulita, which helps coordinate between Orompas. This is especially relevant if you own a business or rental.

Recommendations and Gratitude

Almar Surf & Skate School can provide recommendations for transportation and accommodations. However, our main activity is to offer surf lessons at beaches like La Lancha or Punta de Mita. We appreciate any messages, contributions, or updates on this matter!

Your Safety is our Top Priority

Your safety remains our highest priority, and we thank you for your understanding as we navigate the uncertainties related to the water safety issue in Sayulita. We are committed to continuing to provide you with a safe and enjoyable surfing experience. Rest assured, we will keep you updated through this blog as soon as we have news on the water quality in Sayulita.

With kindest regards
